Question
My girlfriend is already receiving SSI for a mental disability. We would like to get married but she is afraid that her benefits will be reduced. My question is if we get married will her benefits stay the same or will my income count against her benefits?

Answer
SSI benefits are affected by household income.  This could mean that if/when you get married that her SSI benefits could be affected based on your income and assets.  It is something to think about.  Prior to getting married you may want to speak to the Social Security office about exactly what would happen if you get married.  This way you would be sure.

Hope this helps.
