Question
Hello Cynthia,

I am keen on learning about "Extra Mural Studies" -- like what exactly the terminology means, how is it implemented and what are the benefits to students and educators?

I could'nt find much about such things on the Internet excepting its definition on Wikipedia.

Can u please guide me?
Thanks and Regards

Answer
Hello Sanjaya,

Extramural refers to studies outside of the normal bounds of learning. It generally encompasses classes for distance learners, corporate groups, high school students, or others who are not enrolled in traditional programs. For example, continuing education courses offered at your local college are extramural courses. You are not a full-time student, but rather an auxillary student. Classes generally offer CEU's or continuing education units. There are a number of benefits, including bringing education to the larger community and offering classes to improve skill sets. I have heard the term extramural when referring to summer school, although summer school is a actually an extention of standard classes.

Regards,
Cindy Wolfe
