Question
I have a BBA from the Univ. of WI at Madison in Real Esate and Finance.  I worked in Commercial Real Esate in AZ and NV for 11 years, then got married and stayed home with my children for the last 9 years.  I now HAVE TO re-enter the workforce and most of my past employers are out of business or have been bought and sold etc.  Now that the market is down I can't even get an interview for jobs I would have definitely gotten before.  I always wanted to go into real estate law, but the programs require recommendations and even my professor "Grasskamp" is dead.  Im thinking of doing the paralegal cert. to get a job where I could get "recommendations" finally, for law school.  Im in Phx., whats the best ABA on-line course for me in AZ if I may have to physically attend some?  Thx.

Answer
Hello LindaAZ,

Thanks for asking a question. I sense desparation from the tone of your question, so I caution you to carefully consider all career paths available to you. With your real estate experience, you may consider property management or even insurance sales. However, you are asking about paralegal training. It is very important that you select a training program accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA). Less than 300 of the 1000 paralegal programs in the US are accredited. Accreditation also paves the way for students to participate in federally funded grant and loan programs. Before deciding on a program, I suggest discussing this career path with a lawyer or paralegal to get an understanding of the opportunities. I recommend choosing a program where the instructors (or most of them) are licensed attorneys.

Here is a link to the ABA's approved paralegal education programs: http://www.abanet.org/legalservices/paralegals/directory/

and here is a link to Arizona's page: http://www.abanet.org/legalservices/paralegals/directory/az.html

None of these are distance learning programs. However, you can request information from any of the schools in the list.

Good luck....I hope you find the program you are looking for.
Regards,
Cindy Wolfe
