Distance Learning - Online Courses and Single Mothers

Expert: Cynthia Wolfe - 6/30/2009

Question
Could you share with me some advantages and disadvantages that single mothers would face while enrolled in online classes.

Answer
Hi Regina,

Everyone who takes online courses must be dedicated and self-driven because there is often little interaction with other students or the instructor. It's hard to categorize single mothers in one group because their situations may be very different.

For example, if a single mother has great support from her family and excellent child care options, it will be much easier for her to attend classes online than someone who has no financial, physical, or emotional support. Being a single parent does not mean that a person is at a disadvantage - it is up to the individual to overcome any issues that present.

Online learning has many advantages, including setting your personal study and classroom interaction schedules. This does not make distance learning easy - it just takes away the need to attend a classroom on a particular day at a particular time.

I know this is not a true answer to your question, but I believe there is so much misinformation related to distance learning on the internet and I do not want to add to it. Going to college is tough - for everybody - not just certain groups of people. Single mothers would face no different advantages or disadvantages than anyone else with similar circumstances.

Regards,
Cindy Wolfe
