Distribution of Products - Estimating freight costs

Expert: Nicola Zheng - 5/4/2009

Question
Hi Nicola,

Is it possible to estimate freight costs for my cargo without having to contact a ship broker each time?

For example:

Voyage charter
Quantity:14,000MT
Cargo: Ordinary Portland Cement, bagged in 1.2M sling bags
POL: Mersin, Turkey
POD: Tripoli, Libya
L/D: 3000/2000 SHINC/SHEX

If I can calculate the number of days (Load (5) + Sea voyage (4)+ Discharge (10) + Delay factor (2)) that the vessel is likely to be required for, can i use this data to get an approximation for shipping cost?

Or is this too crude a method?

Many thanks,

Amman

Answer
Hi Amman,

Freight cost depends on a lot of factors, I do not believe the number of days has an impact.  However, whether the cargo load is loose cargo or full container load, whether you have an annual shipping contract with any particular steamship line or forwarder.  However, for approximation purpose, you may want to inquire with your forwarder about the per cbm rate (rate per cubic meter)for loose cargo and container rate for 20ft, 40ft, and 40ft HQ containers along with each container's usable cbm in order to put together a decent estimate for each shipment.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Nicola
