Question
My boyfriend of four years is an illegal immigrant and we have two kids together. he was married but they only lived together less than a year. since then its been 7 years that hes had no contact with her recently she filed for divorce and was granted alimony. Is there a way for him to get out of it.

Answer
Hello Michelle,

When she filed for divorce, he should of got a notice and a copy of the original divorce petition. If he would of read the papers he could of went to court and contested the alimony. With the information you gave me, It seems as if he didn't respond to the papers served to him. Or he was unable to be located and she proceeded with the divorce by publishing a public notice of the divorce. She wouldn't just be able to go to court and request what she wants and get it. The process within the court system gives ample time for both parties to respond. If he wants to "Get out of it" then he needs to go to court and begin a modification on the original request.
Best of luck,
Rebecca
