Question I am helping a cousin by doing some research on divorce. Her husband has:
1) all assets in his name, she doesn't know bank account numbers, etc. and has led her to believe there is no money.
2) verbally abuses her in front of children
3) has threated to leave with kids if she ever "dares" to leave him
4) Does not leave physical marks, but has pulled her outside by dragging her by the hair.
5) has threatened to kill her if she leaves.
Bottom Line: Not a nice guy and he has her really, really, really scared.
I am interviewing attorneys and helping her select one, as she cannot use the phone without permission from him. She and I are planning to make a move in January. Need help! Where do we turn?
Ohio is where they live
2 girls involved (ages 9 and 11)
Any quick advice would be helpful. Can attorneys handle finding all of his assets? Can a judge order an emergency restraining order and allow her to go out of state without his knowledge?
Thanks!
Leslie
Answer Dear Leslie,
Your cousin can turn to the Domestic Abuse hotline Number to find out what she needs to do and how to do it with the perimeters of the law: http://www.odvn.org/
Yes, attorney's can help to find assets- many times they have to hire a forensic accountant to locate hidden funds. Yes, a judge can issue a restraining order. I do not know if she would be allowed to leave the state without a judges permission.
Someone at the Ohio abuse hotline would know the answer.
