Question
my friend is going thru a divorce.  His wife wants it he did not.  What are the benefits of him having a seperate lawyer?  They own a house and 2 cars together. They have no children together.

Answer
Dear Kirsten,

There are many benefits to having separate lawyers. The number one being they are working hard for you and it is IMPOSSIBLE to have a lawyer look after both spouses' interests. While it may be less expensive, I think you will be hard pressed to find a lawyer willing to represent both spouses.

What they may want to do is use mediation (much less adversarial and expensive) Visit equalityinmarriage.org and look up Alternative Dispute Resolutions on Google). In mediation you do not hire a lawyer at all. But I do recommend that before your decree is signed that a lawyer should review it for accurancy.

I hope this helps. If he has any further questions he can email me info@equalityinmarriage.org or via this site.
