Question I have been married for 17yrs. now he wants a divorce. I have not work for about 15yrs. It was both of ours idea for me to raise the kids while he work he makes good money and I was a bartender but I still had money coming in. I never went pass high school , not very knowledgeable in the smarts or trade area. I know that I have to have some time to go back to school and try to get a trade but how long? My youngest child is already 14teen yrs. So basicly I have to live on my alimony check and that will be for 8yrs half the years we were married right? We are buying a house worth alot like everybody elses, he thinks that it would be easy for me to turn around and buy another one with half the money. but everybody elses is just as much. Have you ever heard of wife getting the house if she gave up his pension?
Answer Dear momepp40,
The best step you can take is to educate yourself on the divorce laws of your state. Use google.com and search under "divorce + name of your state". Divorcesource.com also has state by state laws. Generally buying a home ends up costing a lot more than buying a an apt. There is quite alot of expense with a home such as property taxes and school taxes.
I would recommend that you read through equalityinmarriage.org's site titled "When Divorcing" it will help you get started on learnign what you need to know about the process. The more you know the better decisions you can make for your future and your children.
Once you have educated yourself a bit you can then be better equipped to to choose a lawyer that will work with you to receive yoru fair share in the divorce.
