Dodge - Engine wont start

Expert: Ram Man - 7/2/2005

Question
I just bought a used 1994 dodge ram full size with a listed 5.2 fi engine. for the first several days there was nothig wrong. I filled the tank in the evening and the next morning the engine would not start. Good cranking, good spark out of the cap. I tried putting a little gas in the carb, and it started right up, and kept running. the next day I had to do the same proceedure, with similar results. Now three days later, I parked the van for a few hours and went to start, there is nothing! I get good cranking, and if I add gas through the carb, it'll run a few seconds, then die. It will not stay running in any way shape or form. Also I am not certian but it sounds like the choke might be sticking, because the engine for the few seconds sounds very labored. I am attempting to start without the air filter in place, so a blocked filter is not the problem.
I am not certian if I am getting gas, or if it is in the injectors. How can I tell if it is the fuel pump, the filter, or the injectors. mechanic is not knowledgable with US spec cars, I am currently in Italy.
Van purchased through govt surpluss auction, no history available

Answer
When you turn the key to the on position without starting or turning the engine over,if the fuel pump is working you will hear a low humming noise for a few seconds from the fuel tank.Another way is to unhook the gas line that runs from the fuel tank (pump)and turn the key to the on position and see if gas is pumping to the engine. It sounds like the fuel pump is bad.If you pour gas in it and it starts it is a fuel related issue.Just not getting the fuel to start it.
