Dodge Repair/'99 ram 1500 4x4 pick up

why will my 1995 dodge ram 1500 pick up with a gas engine will start just fine when the engine is cold but won't restart after it has been running for a while & I shut it off & try to restart it. what could be the problem?

Hi William,
It probably is a too lean mixture to allow for the engine to catch and run. Why that is needs to be determined. There is an on-board self diagnostic capability that you access using the ignition key: "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time.
Then watch the Check Engine light, which remain 'on' to see it begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat the process to be sure of an accurate set of flash counts. Then tell me the counts in the order of appearance and that will tell us what the fault might be. Also, let me know if you have the 3.9, 5.2, or 5.9L engine.
I look forward to your report.
PS: Ok so you have the 5.9. Let me know the flash counts.
I would begin with checking the vacuum hoses as shown on the label on the underside of the hood. Also, while I don't have the '95 label I do see on the '96 that engine does have an egr valve. That valve can get gummed up and then it sticks slightly ajar when you turn off the warm engine. So find the egr valve (it is on a narrow diameter pipe that branches off one or the other exhaust manifolds. You will find that it has a vacuum operated top piece and between that and the body of the valve you will see a flange that conceals the valve stem. Spray some WD-40 or similar solvent on the stem where it enters the valve body and then move the stem back and forth with the tip of a screwdriver inserted into the slot on the stem. If you have the egr it is often the cause of hard starting because it leans out the mixture. Also check the vacuum hose that goes to the transmission.
Thanks for the rating and nomination. I'll be available this evening for you report about the flash counts.
