Dodge Repair - Dodge Shadow, no spark

Expert: Pete Lacey - 11/13/2004

Question
Pete, I asked you this a week ago (Plymouth forum):
" Hi Pete. My son's car (at college 500 miles away) quit suddenly ('after turning on cruise') and would not restart. It would crank but not fire. I paid a short visit to troubleshoot. I found: Dodge Shadow '91 3.0 liter; no spark to the coil during crank (with test light across the incoming wires - worked on my Acclaim). I traded computers with my 92 Acclaim (same engine). The Shadow computer worked in the Acclaim, but the Shadow would not start with the Acclaim computer. We've not gotten computer codes yet (we just found the ignition on-off process and haven't had time to test that.) I've found mention of trouble with an auto shutdown relay and signals from the distributor. I don't know how to test for those components, or if they are even an issue. Have you any suggestions? thanks, Wyatt, Nebraska"

You replied: "Check the dis module, that's what goes on the 3.0."

I found a used distributor and checked it out on another car (91 Acclaim 3.0). It worked fine, so I sent it to my son. He tried to crank the old rotor around to line up on cylinder 1, but it didn't move! He replaced the old distributor with the new one, and it doesn't rotate either, although the engine is cranking. That doesn't sound good, but what is wrong now?  thanks, Wyatt
