Dodge Repair/Stalling and Check engine light

Question
I have a 98 Durango, 5.0 engine.  It is attempting to stall and the check engine light came on.  I am going to change the PVC Valve and Fuel Filter along with treating the fuel with Heet.  The instructions tell me to remove the negative terminal on the battery (I know this will reset the memory).  Not sure if this will fix my problem but with the memory clear, I will need to wait till the Check engine light comes on again before I will have a shop run the test.  Is there anything else I should do to try to fix the problem on my own?

Thanks,
Bruce

Answer
Hello Bruce
You are makeing the right steps . The only way is a diagnostic test to see why the light is comeing on . In my shop many times folks want me to guess but you know if i am wroang then they want to blame me . not fair so i stoped trying to guess years agao . So i will tell you the same just do a diagnostic test at first better to do this pete
