Question 1996 neon/2.0/ sounds like exhaust going/major fuel consumption/lack of power/had it checked no visible signs of wear/backfires upon takeoff,,any suggestions?

Answer Jenny,
Two things to have checked,
The convertor and the EGR valve,
If the convertor is stopped up then you will get all the problems you listed plus some.
The EGR valve will most times turn the check engine light on but it to can give you the same problems,
