About Jeff Lutton
Expertise
How to pick a good kennel, dog daycare or overnight facility. Should I leave with friends or have a dog walker come into my home. How do I know that my pet will be taken care of properly?

Experience
I have had a dog since I was 3 years old. In my professional life I was traveling quite a bit so my dog boarded more often that I would have liked. I got tired of the corporate world and now own a doggie day care and overnight facility. My expertise is in how to pick a kennel for your pet when you travel.

Dog Boarding/Kenneling - cold tail or limp tail syndrome

Expert: Jeff Lutton - 7/8/2008

Question
I just picked up my dog from a weeks stay at the kennel and noticed several hours later that he has a limp tail. It normally sticks straight out and constantly wagging. It now only sticks out 3 inches and limps after that and he doesn't wag it. He will let me touch it and seems to be tender. Is this common? What can I do. He can still wag it and move it so I don't think it is broken. The kennel says they never noticed it limp. When there it was straight and constantly wagging, but they did give him a bath before I picked him up.

Answer
It sounds like a broken tail.  It is not common, but an injury that can occur shuffling dogs through doors.  Sometimes the dog will back up unexpectedly as the door is closing or just a worker who is not paying attention.  Left untreated it can turn into a very serious injury.  I would go get it checked out by a vet as soon as you can.
