Question Well I went to the bathroom for like 5 min not even that I locked my boxer(in heat) in the bedroom nextdoor alone, well she pawed the door open and then I heard my boxer Cinnamon yelping and my labrador Hunter bred with her the first word out of my mouth I don't even want to repeat we didn't want them to breed but they had been in the "tie" for 15 minutes I told my father not to pull them apart so he didn't hurt either one of them (thank god I have dog books or I wouldn't know this!!) my labrador is only 1 year old I didn't him to breed her we always kept them seprate when my boxer is in heat what am I going to do I'm so scared!!!!!! I never had this happen before my boxer has arthritis in her back left leg because she is 8 1/2 years old would it hurt her to give birth to the puppies??? and plus even though she is AKC and papered the people we got her from didn't want us to have her papers because for one she was the runt and for two they didn't want us to breed her well we tried to hook her up with lots of boxers before but she is so picky. she always wanted a litter she treated all of my old dogs like her own puppies I'm not a breeder but I love my dogs and I don't want to see anything bad happen to my Cinnamon I had her since I was 4years old and I grew up with her eventhough I'm 14 please just please give me an answer to my question! after the tie was over I called my local vet, she said not to be worried and she will be fine I was so scared I was trembling my dad thinks nothing happened but I told him that we have to face the fact she is going to have her first litter....eeeehhhh..another option is to give her to a rescue group and I'm not going to do that everyone thinks I just want to breed my dogs just for the heck of it well I'm nothing like that at all to me I shouldn't of never left that room and plus the bad news is that I had to tell my mom when she got home...OH BOY she was furious can you give me tips and advice for how to care for a pregnant dog?? I'm sorry this was so long My Labrador Hunter is 100lbs and 26 1/2in tall and my boxer is 57.8lbs and 22in tall I just have another question how big do you think the puppies would be when they are adults??
Answer Hi Ashley! First of all, can I tell you something, and you not take offense? Calm down. :-) These things do happen, and I'm glad that you are this concerned about it. It shows you truly care. Did this just happen today? There is such a thing as a mismate shot. It has to be given within 24-48 hours after a breeding takes place. What happens is it won't let any fertilized eggs implant into the womb. You may want to consider it, talk to your parents, and the vet. A dog doesn't have to have a litter to be happy. They would never even know the difference if they didn't.
There's no reason to give her to a rescue group. If she is pregnant, then you'll take care of her, I'm sure. The best thing that you can do for her is to not let her get fat. It can make the pups too big to be born naturally, and cause mom problems during whelping. It's not good for her arthritis either. Make sure she gets plenty of exercise. This will help with the whelping. I would be a bit concerned about her age, and her arthritis. It may cause some complications. My best advice would be to take her to the vet for a check up. There may have been a good reason why her breeder didn't want her bred. She may have some kind of health problem. So, have any health problems ruled out. I have some really good web sites that has a lot of information about whelping and such if you'd like them. Just let me know.
It's really hard to say for sure how big the pups will get. They can take after the Lab, or the Boxer. They may even end up in the middle somewhere. There's no exact science when dealing with dogs. If I can be of anymore help, just let me know!
