Dog Breeding and Whelping - sonogram timing

Expert: Denise Allen - 10/10/2008

Question
When is the best time to have a sonogram done on a bitch to determine if she is
pregnant?  I thought it was 28, 29, days, but I have forgotten.  I must make
plane reservations and need to do it soon.  The best time we expect her to whelp
is Nov 10. Thanks for any help you can give on this one.  Shirley

Answer
Hi Shirley:

I'm so sorry for my tardiness in responding to your question. I'm in the midst of some serious family medical problems & my time has been more limited than usual.

Usually an ultrasound can be done as early as 25 days gestation to determine the presence of fetal heartbeats. It would probably be best to double check this with your veterinarian as all seem to have a slightly different opinion in this area. The best way to determine litter size & the potential for any natural whelping problems, such as over-sized pups, is to have a simple abdominal X-ray done once she's 50+ days gestation. I hope this helps & wish you & your girl the very best!
