Subject: my dog just whelp a week ago and i need few questions answer. help me please.

Question
Hi, my dog is like the medium sz breed, i cant really tell the exact breed since she is hybrid. She gave birth to 2 puppies near noon then 5 more around 9 PM. So far, all the puppies seem very healthy but I am a bit worry about the mom.

she isn't eating much && seems really depress. Has diarrhea but it is gettin better so I'm guessing she's just cleaning out her system.. hopefully? Today i notice she has this 2 inches long discharge that seems a bit dark bloody? I want to know if that is normal for her since she might just be cleaning out her system? I'm afraid of her having a possibility of a dead baby inside her. Right now is approx. exactly a week since her whelping.

please help me.

Answer
Hi! The diarhhea sounds like it was normal, especially since you said it's starting to clear up. A lot of dogs get it after whelping, especially if they ate a lot of the placentas. It's natures way of cleaning the dog out. Is she vomiting, refusing food/water? If so, get her to the vet. When she nurses the puppies, does she stretch out and let them nurse, or is she curled up looking miserable? You may also want to check her breasts for any warm, red spots, and make sure the milk is of normal color. If anything's off at all, get her to the vet, that's your safest action. Good luck!
