Dog Breeding and Whelping - When to breed a schnauzer

Expert: Denise Allen - 8/1/2008

Question
We are going to stud out our minature schnauzer.  My question is how long after the female schnauzer goes in heat do they need to be together?

Thanks.

Answer
Hello Mary:

All dogs vary somewhat in their cycles but on average, about 9 to 10 days following the initial signs of the cycle (swelling of the vulva & a bloody vaginal discharge) the female will enter into estrus, which is the fertile portion of the cycle. At this point the vaginal flow will become lighter in both flow & color, becoming more of a light pink to straw color. The best indicator of estrus will be her acceptance of him mounting & mating her. She should not only accept it but may likely encourage him to do so. On average, estrus lasts for about 5 days & it's usually best to plan to breed every other day for a total of two to three times. Skipping a day in between allows the male's sperm to be of higher potency & quality. Hope this helps & I wish you the best of luck!
