Dog Food (Canine Diet and Nutrition) - ACV, Baking Soda, Tearstains, Bichon frise!

Expert: Marie - Vet Nurse - Free Telephone Consultations - 3/26/2008

Question
QUESTION: Hi Marie, I have a bichon frise who's 11 months and 10 lbs.  She gets tearstains and we heard that Organic/Unfiltered/Raw Apple Cider Vinegar (by Bragg) works really well but also it wears away the enamel of the teeth.  I researched it and read that adding 1/8 tsp of baking soda to 1 tsp of ACV to the dog's water will have take away the tearstains and minimize the amount of wearing of the enamel.

So the question is; is baking soda safe for a dog this small?  It's just 1/8 tsp but she's so tiny.

P.S.  We know we can use Angels Eyes etc, but we want to limit the chemicals.

thanks, Jessie

ANSWER: Hi jessie -  The baking soda can work but I would be careful on such a small sized doggie.  You can give her problems with the body's balance acid/ph levels.

Make sure your little one is on a good food - Holistic and Natural with no grain, if possible ( Innova - Wellness - Solid Gold brands)

NuVET Plus has an all Natural Vitamin Supplement that works great on tear stains.  Guaranteed to help and reduce the stains, or your money back.  No risk - give it a try.
About .50 cents per day - Great vitamin

QUESTION: Hi, thanks for your help.  We have fed her Innova Dry Puppy since she was 10 weeks (now 11 months).  We plan on switching her over at 12 months to the adult formula.  We wanted to feed her Innova EVO but the protein levels are very high and we heard that it is only good for large breed dogs. Is this true?  We want the best for our pup.

Also, we heard that switching between 3-4 foods every few months is recommended but we have heard mixed reviews on this.  We haven't started because we wanted to know what is good for her first.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Again Jessie- Glad to see she is on Innova.  Well, she can be put on the adult food now.  You can mix the regular Innova adult with the Innova EVO adult -  That way she gets the benefits of the two.
I am not one to change dog foods every 3 months.  I am sure it may help some dogs that are prone to allergens... but I have never asked people to do this.

Hope this has helped.  You can also do some Innova EVO - canned - one full tablespoon on top of the dry - then mix with a tiny bit of water.
Also, don't forget to try the NuVET Plus - Guarnteed to help or your money back..
