Expert: Marie - Ask the Pet Nurse - pet food recipes - 2/12/2009

Question
My male dachshund 9.5 years old, just recovering from serious cystitis. Couldnt pee - was at vets for a week and on IV drip and had catheter for 5 days.  A lot of blood in his urine.  Had to be forcefeed food and water.  Currently on Hills c/d diet for another 10 days then has a check.  He's still far from well.  He really hates the food.

Before he was sick I was giving him chicken, green beans and carrots and he loves that.  He loves vegetables more than anything.  He's 13 kgs and needs to lose some weight as well, so on vets advice I removed the rice that used to be mixed with his chicken and vegies.  Now they tell me he has to have this canned food and then in 10 days change him over to Hills r/d diet.

Is there really no food I can cook that is OK.  I find it hard to believe that he can only eat canned food?

Any suggestions welcome.
