Dog Food (Canine Diet and Nutrition) - Low protein diet. for kidney failure in lab;

Expert: Marie - Ask the Pet Nurse - pet food recipes - 1/3/2010

Question
Hi there. I have a Chocolate Lab, he is about 8 years old and 75ish pounds.  A couple of years ago he was diagnosed with severe kidney failure.  The Vet didn't think he would pull through, thankfully he did.  I was told to put him on Hills U/D diet.  A couple of times we ran out of the special food and gave him a regular brand food and he vomited both times.  Is this a coincidence or does the regular food affect him negatively?  Also is there a similar type of ultra low protein food available from other manufacturers?

Answer
Hi Rich, Well, glad to hear your lab is doing well!  Your only other choice, besides the Hills' RX diet, is home cooking.
I have some recipes you can cook up.  Other than that, you will need to keep using the Hill's Stuff.
He can't have regular food at all..... MUST be low in phos and proteins.

Let me know if you want to home cook?????
