Question
QUESTION: Can you please recommand a good puppy food, I'm currently feed my beagle puppy Science Diet because I thought it was a good brand, someone suggested "BLUE" but it's hard to find, Petco is the store I go too, Please assist. Thank you

ANSWER: Danielle,

I just spent a few minutes going through Petco's website to see what foods they offer and, I have to say, I can't honestly recommend ANY of their dog foods. Everything they stock is a pretty low-end food with respect to quality ingredients. Do you have any feed stores in your area? They often carry a much better selection of quality foods than the pet stores do. Have you considered buying your food online? Many sites like www.petfooddirect.com or others will ship the food to your house. You can also get on monthly programs so you never run out.

If you want to see what my idea of the best dog foods out there are, check out a site called www.dogfoodanalysis.com. Any of their 6-star foods are what I would call premium. Even the 4- and 5-star foods aren't bad. If you can find one of these foods locally, you'll do far better than what's available at Petco.

Good luck.

QUESTION: What about Natural Balance? They has all natural The only place I can get dog food is Petco, Petsmart and other pet stores that carry about the same thing, can you tell me which brands then I can look up at petfooddirect. Thanks for your help.

Answer
Danielle,

Of the ones I found at the Petco site, Natural Balance would be one of the better ones. It's very high in grains and has only a minimal amount of meat protein, but there are no really poor ingredients.

If you're looking online, the best ones would be Innova EVO, Solid Gold Barking at the Moon, Orijen, Timberwolf Organics, and Wellness CORE. The site I mentioned above, www.dogfoodanalysis.com is a good way to check on any specific food you're wondering about.

Experience

An animal lover and owner all my life, I spent years as a foster parent for a national rescue group and as a volunteer at my local Humane League. Many years ago, I began researching and using natural health care methods to treat both my pets and my family. I have worked with holistic vets to develop and provide custom homeopathic and Bach Flower Essence blends for their clients. In 2002, I started Pets By Nature to give pet owners who are seeking a healthier and more natural way to feed and care for their pets a reliable source of education, support, guidance, and products. Relying on honesty, integrity, and openness with respect to natural health care for companion animals, I am able to provide quality products, services, and information with the intent of helping interested pet owners learn about and practice a more natural method of pet nutrition and health care.

Education/Credentials
I am a college graduate and full time Business Systems Analyst. I have written many articles for publication on my web site and throughout the local pet community. I have been a vendor at local dog shows and do public speaking on the topics of pet nutrition and holistic health care.

Past/Present Clients
My clients range from new pet owners to 4th generation raw feeding breeders. I enjoy a wonderful professional relationship with several veterinary practices who refer my diets, supplements, and homeopathics to many of their clients. I ship supplements and flower essences all over the world, and provide a quality frozen raw food to the Central Pennsylvania area. Virtually all of my marketing is word-of-mouth referrals from my current clients and I consider them all my extended family.
