Expertise
I can answer training questions, both basic and advanced, and am familiar with almost all of the methods and tools used. I am not closed-minded and do not think that one method and one tool is the best/only way to train. I answer questions with consideration to both the owner`s and the dog`s needs and abilities. I am also very knowledgeable about canine nutrition.

IF YOU HAVE A HOUSETRAINING QUESTION, PLEASE go to my web page on housetraining, located at http://housetraining.angelfire.com. If you try the suggestions there, and are still having problems, let me know.

Dog Training - older dogs & puppies

Question
We have an "outdoor" collie/shepherd mix dog.  Although, in the winter she becomes an "indoor" dog.  Lily is 8 yrs and we are considering getting a puppy.  I have heard that the older dog can train the puppy the rules of house (or yard).  Is this true?  Any suggestions.  The puppy will be also outdoors.  We trained Lily to stay in our yard using the shock collar method which worked well for us, but we no longer have it.

Answer
Mari, I guess the most important question I have for you is why are you considering getting a new puppy?

Secondly, how does Lily behave around other dogs and puppies now? Many older dogs simply will not put up with a puppy's silliness and constant pestering. What if Lily decides she doesn't like the new addition?

Lastly, while it is definitely true that puppies (all dogs, really) do learn from other dogs, you surely are not expecting Lily to teach the new puppy the boundaries of the yard. That simply will not happen. You will have to teach the new puppy to stay in the yard just like you did with Lily.
