Question Hello,
We just got a Basset Hound. It is about 4 months old. It always goes outside to go to the bathroom, but it will scratch loudly @ the back door.
Here is the problem. I work nights and sleep days and the scratching is very loud.
People tell me to get a spray bottle and spray it with water, however this is not working.
Do you have any ideas?
Thank You.
Answer Hi Steve!
I believe when you say 'he scratches at the back door' it is when he needs to go outside to go to the bathroom - is this correct? Or does he just want to go out and play? This may be a blessing in disguise - better loud scratching than urine stains and smells in your home. If it is not to use the bathroom, you may want to consider crating your puppy while you sleep and giving him a Kong toy filled with treats or peanut butter to keep him busy for a while so you can sleep. Remember that puppy needs attention, so be sure it is out of the crate more than he is in it. If the scratching is to go outside to go to the bathroom, you may want to look at this blog post on my training bell to avoid having your door all scratched up. http://blog.gizmo2wizmo.com/2008/09/13/house-train-your-dog-the-easy-way.aspx
Good luck!
