Dog Training/How can I tell if my dog's panting is bad?

We had a golden retriever who started panting in the middle of the night for no apparent reason and it was not hot. We took her to two different vets and they said it was nothing to worry about - just that she was getting older and a little bit overweight. After several months, she collapsed one night and died suddenly. We didn't have an autopsy but one doctor said it could have been a ruptured spleen that had been bleeding for awhile. We still don't know for sure what caused it. She had been running and playing and swimming that day and no problems.
