Question
Hi. I have a 2 year old whippet mix that I have had for around a year. She was spayed and housebroken when I adopted her. She stays in the house when I am home, and in her backyard during the day which she loves. During last winter she stayed in the house because it gets too cold for her to stay in the house. She sleeps in the house under my bed and we have never had any accidents until last week. She has peed and pooped in corners of 2 different rooms of my house. She was doing it during the middle of the night so I began confining her to the bedroom. This evening I was in the living room and she went off (which she frequently does to check on the cats) and I got up to get something and saw that she had pooped and peed in the same spot that she had been going. I know the first step is to take her to the vet, but I don't think that it is medical since she has been pooping and peeing. How can I re-train her, but still allow her to be in her yard during the day? Thanks.

Lauren

Answer
Lauren,
I'm confused, you say you leave her in the house because it gets too cold in the house.   And you say how can you retain her  to be in her yard during the day.    Is she allowed to go to the bathroom in her yard and if so, then why cant you let her out during the day?  Maybe that is why she is going in the house because she cant go out during the day.  I think you need to answer these questions for me so i understand.
In the mean time, she could also have a bacterial infection which makes her have to go more often.  or something in her food may have changed?  is she getting into the cat boxes???? that can make them go.    Or has something changed in the household.
One thing you can do is crate her for awhile and see if that helps.
when you confine her to the bedroom does she go there?
Make sure you get an enzyme cleaner and clean those to spots she is going in very well.
Waiting to hear from you
Nancy
