About Karen Brittan
Expertise
I have been showing miniature schnauzers in conformation, obedience, and earthdog for forty years, and am a professional dog groomer. I am not a veterinarian and cannot answer questions of a veterinary nature. However, I can give my opinion or share some experiences on some health issues. If your dog is sick, it should be seen by a licensed professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Experience
I have taught obedience classes and have taught people how to groom for many years.

Question
My daughter is away and her Bichon ate steel wool. Vet gave meds and oat bran muffins and Scooter seemed much better. Today vet is away, dog is lethargic and not drinking. Question.... how do you get the dog to take ice chips or drink water. can they have a popscicle like people do?

Answer
I don't imagine a popsicle would hurt him, but I don't have any idea how much sugar is in there. You would want to minimize his sugar intake.

What my daughter does to get her agility dog to drink more water when away at shows is to mix a small amount of Gerber Strained Chicken (the baby food) into some water and freeze it into small ice cubes. She then pulls these out of the cooler when needed and puts one or two into the dog's water. This works well for her, but obviously, the water bowl has to be cleaned frequently.

You could also try some low-sodium chicken broth for him.

If the dog seems to be getting worse, get him into the emergency vet.
