About Karen Brittan
Expertise
I have been showing miniature schnauzers in conformation, obedience, and earthdog for forty years, and am a professional dog groomer. I am not a veterinarian and cannot answer questions of a veterinary nature. However, I can give my opinion or share some experiences on some health issues. If your dog is sick, it should be seen by a licensed professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Experience
I have taught obedience classes and have taught people how to groom for many years.

Subject: white boxer's face is swollen and hives

Question
Hi i would greatly appreciate your opinion! I know white boxers are very sensitive to most things and she has broken out before. We were at the pool and creek yesterday and when we woke up early this morning her face was swollen to almost double the normal size and the hives on her body were extremely big and on her tongue as well. She also has red bumps on her stomach and inside of legs. We gave her 12mg of Benadryl at eight o'clock and she improved slowly. Around one o'clock we gave her 25 more mg (she is 48 lbs) and an Aveeno oatmeal bath. Since it is Sunday we can't get her to the vet until the morning i was wondering if you have any ideas on what we could do until then or what it could be from because last time my vet could not tell me and just put her on tons of medications. Do you think we should wait a few days before taking her to the vet? Thank you so much, Brianna

Answer
Personally, I would get her into the emergency vet ASAP! If her face is swollen, her airways could close up on you and you could end up with a dead dog.

You could also try bathing her in baking soda as that is good for hives. This could be a reaction to a bug bite or something she ate.
