About Becky
Expertise
I have owned dogs my whole life. I was a veterinarian assistant for several different vets, so I might be able to help out on health issues. Although I love all dogs, my favorites are the toy breed. I am not a breeder, so those type of questions should be directed to someone who is. I have three chinese crested, two chihuahuas and one yorkie/silky mix. I would be happy to answer any questions on these particular breeds,or just dogs in general. Please keep in mind, however, that I am NOT a Veterinarian. If you feel your dog is seriously ill, then please take your pet to a qualified professional. Although we "experts" try to help you with your questions, it is impossible to "see" or "touch" your dog through a computer. If you feel your dog's life is in danger, please call a Veterinarian immediately. Thank you!

Dogs - lifespan when heat cycle ends

Question
8yr old female american pitbull terrier/boxer have been though many heat cycles w/maggie wanted to know if they end when she reaches a certain age or will this continue until she passes away? any ifo would be much appreciated

Answer
Hi Brandon!
Dogs can continue to go into heat in their elderly years. Sometimes their hormones are not functioning properly and their heats will be sporadic, but most dogs will have a heat cycle until they die.  In lieu of this information, I urge you to have your dog spayed.  Older dogs have extreme difficulty with pregnancy and the birthing process, often losing puppies and sometimes the mother herself is not strong enough to make it. There are also uterine infections, tumors and mammary problems that you can avoid by having her spayed. I truly hope you will consider this. It's also a plus not to have to worry about her heat cycle and keeping interested males away!
God Bless,
Becky
