Dogs - Housetraining a peek-a-poo
Expert: Melissa Wiser - 11/5/2009
Question I just adopted a 5 month old peek-a-poo that was trained to "go" in the house. I need to housebreaking him ASAP because I have a one year old son. I repeatedly take the dog outside and then a few minutes later he either poops or pees in our vicinity. My husband and I both work, but I only work 2 days a week. Is there a good way that I can train our puppy soon to go outside considering his bathroom background? Please let me know soon because having a child I don't want doggy mess on the carpet and if we can't fix it I'm afraid we can't keep him- and we already love him so much after just 2 days with him. Please help!
Answer Hello Jessica;
This will be a challenge as you know for sure!
But, I advise that you get him a "Exercise" pen, and cord him off there when you cannot watch him, and this way, he will have to go in that area...like a Laundry room, or your garage, etc.
If you let him free, he will not know what is expected of him.
You can also "Crate" him, when you are not able to watch him, and then, pick him up and take him to the "outside Potty area" when you need him to go.
Then "Praise Praise Praise" him!!!
This way, with your positive reinforcement you will give him the "Confidence" he needs to know what is expected of him!
Give it some time, as he is 5 months old...he will learn, but, it will be the repeat of the positive reinforcement, that will give him the idea!
Let me know how you do, and I will await to hear back from you,
Sincerely,
Melissa
