Dogs - Male puppy

Expert: Shelley Davis - 11/5/2009

Question
Just wondering at what age male puppies typically begin lifting their legs, instead of squatting to urinate?

Answer
Hi P.

Thank you for writing to me.  A male dog usually starts lifting it's leg as puberty sets in around the age of 9 to 10 months.  He begins to want to mark his territory this way.  However, many male dogs don't lift their legs until after a year old and some never do it.

Best Regards,
Shelley Davis
