Question HI, I was petting my dog, Woody, a few minutes ago and came across a huge bloody gash , on his tail. I do not know how long it has been there, but i want to know what i can do to make it better, well at least a little bit. My dog is in pain, and refuses to let me put ointment on his tail. Could he be infected, could he have been bitten by another animal that could have rabies??!?! i do not know what to do ;( Thank You
Answer Hannah;
There is always a chance of infection when a wound occurs!
I will recommend that you take him in to th vet as soon as possible. If you are not dealing with an emergency and constant blood gushing, then just keep a cold compress wrapped in a towel, and clean the area out with "Peroxide" which you can pour on him before he knows what is going on. If he is constantly bleeding, then do take him right away to the emergency Vet center...and they will talk to you about Rabies. If he has had his shot for Rabies, then you are in the clear either way.
If he is in pain, you can give him some baby aspirin crushed in some food, and watch him until the morning.
Let me know how he does.
Best wishes,
Melissa
