About Karen Brittan
Expertise
I have been showing miniature schnauzers in conformation, obedience, and earthdog for forty years, and am a professional dog groomer. I am not a veterinarian and cannot answer questions of a veterinary nature. However, I can give my opinion or share some experiences on some health issues. Everyone should remember that this is a volunteer service, and few of us are up late into the night. Medical emergencies require a veterinary visit, or at least a telephone call... not an internet question which might not be viewed and answered until hours later. If your dog is sick or injured, it should be seen by a licensed professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Experience
I have taught obedience classes and have taught people how to groom for many years.

Dogs - Would BRAT diet work for dog with diarrhea

Expert: Karen Brittan - 7/5/2009

Question
Hello

I know my dog is trying to get rid of something bad he ate. I have 3 children and when they would have diarrhea the Doc always said there is no cure except hydrate yourself and The BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast). My  dog has no other symptoms...and I know it just has to get out of him...Would you recommend giving my dog rice or any thing other natural that would bind him up? Please help...Thank you

Answer
It really depends on WHY your dog has diarrhea. Diarrhea can be caused from internal parasites, eating too much, eating something spoiled, or eating a new food he has never had before. This is assuming that he doesn't have something like inflammatory bowel disease.

Your dog should be tested for worms/giardia 1-2 times a year. (Twice if your kids are younger.) If his stool is normal, then the diarrhea is from something else.

Most cases of diarrhea call for fasting the dog for a day, and then introducing his regular food back slowly. Rice is good, with a few kibbles mixed in to it.
