About Madeline Friedman
Expertise
When you submit a question, let me know that you have read my bio completely by putting at the beginning of your question: "I have read your bio and agree to read and rate your response fairly within three days." Unless you agree to this Virtual Contract, your question will be rejected as I'll know that you didn't take the time to read my bio. Questions re: canine behavior AS IT RELATES TO TRAINING, tricks, and everyday behaviour and interactions and which are NOT related to possible medical conditions ARE WELCOME. I will AUTOMATICALLY REJECT questions of a medical nature which don't relate to training. Questions about itching, sores, oozings, pregnancies, and the like will NOT BE ANSWERED by me. My answers reflect research, extensive experience, and formal, ongoing, self-motivated education in the areas of animal science, hehavioral biology, and behavioural psychology. If you dislike my answer because I've been honest, don't blithely rate me 'down' or say I was impolite when I wasn't. When you ask me a question and get my response, you can expect an honest answer although it may suggest you have work to do. Such isn't a reason to take shots at me in ratings. I am always polite. Your question must make sense, be well structured grammatically and not require that I "decode" misspellings or sentences. If you would like to retain my services in the NYC, NJ, or Palm Beach Co., FL areas, please contact me for training. If I answer within the time frame provided by AllExperts, don't unfairly comment that I didn't answer your question quickly enough. If you have an emergency or feel your dog is behaving in a way which may compromise anyone's well being, call a vet immediately. If your dog dies or is euthanized after I respond to your question, don't lash out and blame me for your dog's death. If your dog seems ill get your dog to a vet ASAP and don't depend on any expert here to save dogs' lives within the generous time frame provided here to respond.

Question
Hi

I have a 3 year old female bull mastiff that I raised from a puppy
and I have a 10 year old jack russell that is a female also had from puppyhood.  In the last 3 months - the bull has been trying to fight the jack - I assume for the dominant role between them and the jack will not back down.  She has always been a pack leader since I raised her.  I keep them seperated now but this is becoming impossible, due to our move soon.
I have heard that getting a male dog will change this - and if that is what I have to do, to restore peace, I will.  Is that a good idea and if not, do you have an answer for me in this situation?  I am scared to ever leave them alone, because every chance the bull gets, she wants to attack the jack.  Its scary and very fustrating.

Thank you

Dena

Answer
Hi Dena,

I found your question floating in the Question Pool.  I might like to answer it, but before I do I need to know if you will agree to read and rate my response within three days of my answering your questions.  I need to know this in advance, because if you read my bio, and I certainly hope you take a few moments to do so, you'll see that I have a policy of not answering any further questions until earlier questions get read and fairly rated.  I've been having some difficulty with this as of late, so now I'm asking in advance for a promise that this is what will occur after I've taken time out of a very busy schedule to answer someone's question on a volunteer basis.

In addition, before I respond, I'd like to know from where or whom you heard that getting another dog, a male, would restore the peace between your bullmastiff and your Jack Russell terrier?  I'm also interested in knowing how you've determined that your bullmastiff is the pack leader, and why you think this plays in to the fighting between the two dogs?  Some details as to what triggers the fights would also be very helpful in my formulating the best answer I can.

I will be very honest in my responses, and before I answer I want to make sure that you're okay with that and won't be defensive about my honesty.  To some people, I may suggest that if you can't keep dogs protected, that they rehome them.  If something like this might not sit well with you, please let me know in advance.  My goal is not only to give volunteer advice in order to protect people in any household, but also to protect any animals from harm.

Best regards,
Madeline at AllExperts
