Dogs/Dominant Female

Question
Hi

I have a 3 year old female bull mastiff that I raised from a puppy
and I have a 10 year old jack russell that is a female also had from puppyhood.  In the last 3 months - the bull has been trying to fight the jack - I assume for the dominant role between them and the jack will not back down.  She has always been a pack leader since I raised her.  I keep them seperated now but this is becoming impossible, due to our move soon.
I have heard that getting a male dog will change this - and if that is what I have to do, to restore peace, I will.  Is that a good idea and if not, do you have an answer for me in this situation?  I am scared to ever leave them alone, because every chance the bull gets, she wants to attack the jack.  Its scary and very fustrating.

Thank you

Dena

Answer
Hi Dena,

I found your question floating in the Question Pool.  I might like to answer it, but before I do I need to know if you will agree to read and rate my response within three days of my answering your questions.  I need to know this in advance, because if you read my bio, and I certainly hope you take a few moments to do so, you'll see that I have a policy of not answering any further questions until earlier questions get read and fairly rated.  I've been having some difficulty with this as of late, so now I'm asking in advance for a promise that this is what will occur after I've taken time out of a very busy schedule to answer someone's question on a volunteer basis.

In addition, before I respond, I'd like to know from where or whom you heard that getting another dog, a male, would restore the peace between your bullmastiff and your Jack Russell terrier?  I'm also interested in knowing how you've determined that your bullmastiff is the pack leader, and why you think this plays in to the fighting between the two dogs?  Some details as to what triggers the fights would also be very helpful in my formulating the best answer I can.

I will be very honest in my responses, and before I answer I want to make sure that you're okay with that and won't be defensive about my honesty.  To some people, I may suggest that if you can't keep dogs protected, that they rehome them.  If something like this might not sit well with you, please let me know in advance.  My goal is not only to give volunteer advice in order to protect people in any household, but also to protect any animals from harm.

Best regards,
