Question
My 4 year old Beagle, Willow, suddenly started showing signs of severe pain one Wednesday afternoon.  She at first looked like she was constipated, then she began crying out in pain.  She stays in a hunched position with her neck very stiff.  We took her to the vet on Thursday and they did x-rays and blood work. The doctor started her on prednisone 20mg 2 a day for the first 2 days and 1/2 every 12 hours for the next 12 days, pain medicine, and a muscle relaxer.  Her blood work came back with everything in normal limits except her liver profile was slightly elevated.  My Beagle still continues to be in severe pain over a week later.  I have been researching the Beagle pain syndrome, but I can not find any information on how to find the correct dosage of prednisone or anything that can tell me how long to expect her to continue to hurt.  I am not sure if I need to try to get her pain medicine changed or have them run more test?  Any and all information or advise would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks so much!  Willow's Mom

Answer
Amanda,

Any breed can get this, its just that they used beagles when they tested for it. It is called Steroid Responsive Meningitis or SRM. That is what the prednisone is for. Make sure she has plenty of fresh cool water.

It might be time to call the DR and tell him/her that Willow is still in A LOT of pain and you are very concerned about it. If the pain meds are not working then your DR needs to give her something stronger. If you feel you are not getting anywhere with your vet it might be time to seek a 2nd opinion or just go with another DR.

I like how you ended your message "Willow's Mom" I am the same with my dog Buddy, He is my 5th son. I hope I helped you out some and I will say a prayer for Willow. Feel free to ask any follow up questions.
