AboutPatti Expertise To date, I've owned 7 dogs, all of which have lived into old age.
Having cared for them in all stages of life, I feel I can offer sound advice to other pet owners, and people considering getting a dog.
I am knowledgeable about the AKC (American Kennel Club) dog breeds, training and exercise, caring for sick and elderly pets, feeding, as well as many holistic treatments pets can benefit from.
My only request is that you write me using standard English and punctuation.
Experience My life experience in this field is more like "on the job training" rather than an actual degree in animal welfare. You may benefit from my experiences over the past 30 years.
Aside from the dogs I've owned, I'm also involved in "breed rescue" and have fostered several dogs, all of which have been adopted to wonderful "forever homes".
I find helping people who want a dog very rewarding.
Question Hi Patti, I wanted to see if you found out any more information on the Chinese Foo Dog. Everything I have found so far just leads back to one person, Brad Trom. From all that I can find and all of the people that I have talked to it would appear that he started the breed in the US by cross breeding Chows. Hardly a rare and ancient breed from the looks of things.
Answer Hi Sam,
The Chinese Foo dog is not an accepted breed by the American Kennel Club, but it seems that at one point there may have been a Chinese Foo breed.
The modern Chinese Foo Dog was discovered in Asia after having long been considered extinct, or so the story goes. You'd have to contact Brad Trom for the details of this discovery.
The theory has been advanced that the Chinese Foo Dog originated through a crossing of Northern European hunting dogs and that of the ancient Chow Chow from the barren steppes of Mongolia. Another belief is that the Chinese Foo Dog is perhaps the missing link between that of the Chinese Wolf and the Chow Chow.
The Chinese Foo Dog is promoted by the Chinese Foo Dog Club of America and International Chinese Foo Dog Association (the groups that Brad Trom is executive director of), and they're registerable with the International Kennel Society, and they're eligible for exhibition at American Rare Breed Association (ARBA), International Kennel Society.
Besides Brad Trom, who seems to be marketing this dog "breed", there are few to none breederd for this breed. I was able to find one, if you're interested:
Sunsplash Kennel. Chinese Foo Dogs. Jon or Liz Clark. Sebastian, FL 32958; (772)581-9448
At least to me, it seems that any Akita or Chow mix can be dubbed "Chinese Foo Dog" there seems to be a problem with a standard look for this breed. People always seem to prefer having a dog breed, than a mixed breed. I'm sure Chinese Foo dogs sell for a lot more than a Chow Chow mix!
