About Becky
Expertise
I have owned dogs my whole life. I was a veterinarian assistant for several different vets, so I might be able to help out on health issues. Although I love all dogs, my favorites are the toy breed. I am not a breeder, so those type of questions should be directed to someone who is. I have three chinese crested, two chihuahuas and one yorkie/silky mix. I would be happy to answer any questions on these particular breeds,or just dogs in general. Please keep in mind, however, that I am NOT a Veterinarian. If you feel your dog is seriously ill, then please take your pet to a qualified professional. Although we "experts" try to help you with your questions, it is impossible to "see" or "touch" your dog through a computer. If you feel your dog's life is in danger, please call a Veterinarian immediately. Thank you!

Question
Hi Becky,

I have a 10 year old Australian Kelpie bitch in what I would say was great health. She eats well, gets lots of excercise and the best vet care when needed.

However, I note that just within the last few days she has developed some strange behaviour. She squats to pee (as she normally does), but instead of one go at relief she does several. Out of character, she now seems to "squat and pee" several times, but little comes out after the first go.

She seems aggitated and trots around to find another pee spot, and has another go. And so on. It's like a dry-pee thing.

Is this something that will pass? Should I be worried? Is it time to visit the vet?

Thanks,
Brian

Answer
Hi Brian,

Yes, I think you need to take her to the vet. It sounds like she may have or may be developing a urinary tract infection. Her urethra is irrated and it makes her feel like she has to pee even if she already has,  or she may not be able to empty her bladder fully the first time. If you let this go, it will only get worse as she needs antibiotics to clear it up.  Human women can have this same problem, and believe you me it's the pits!  LOL

God Bless,
Becky
