Dogs - Hair loss

Expert: Trisha - 10/15/2006

Question
21/2 year old doberman recently had a litter (11 weeks) She is losing her hair on her chest and neck and down her back. I used to raise emglish springer spaniels and often shortly after a litter of pups they would blow their coat as I refered to it.Her attitude is fine no itching scratching chewing etc.
Winter is coming and we usually spend hours everyday outside but lately due to her hair loss she is shivering so we head in. A coat has only sped up the hair loss. No fleas UTD on everything and other wise normal.Just cold and funny looking.
Please advise.
Bald cold and wanting outside.

Answer
Hi Sherry :-)

Oh dear your poor little Dog. I am not certain what could be causing the hair loss in her. Especially sudden hair loss.

Has she had any Dermatological problems in the past? Because she definitely hasn't got Fleas then you can rule out this as a cause. Has she been recently wormed and had treatment which is used for Fleas, Ticks and Mites?

It is possible she could have mites r has picked up a bacterial infection. I would take her to the Vet because of this because if it is a bacterial infection there is a chance the puppies will contract this and it can be quite difficult in your Dogs to treat infections because their immune system is much weaker than a Adult Dog.

Good luck at the Vet and all the best.
