I have a multipet household, two cats, two birds, a fish, a hamster, and a dog. The dog, a basset/beagle mix, was the third pet we got. First there was Tig, the old cat, then there was the hamster and finally there was the dog. Then the cat, birds and finally the fish. Anyway, if I call the cat, the dog comes and nudges my hand (I ignore him, of course). If I start to pet the cats or talk to the birds the dog, Joe, comes up next to me and if I dont pet him and I put the cat down, he wrestles with it. He's a highly jealous dog, I'm thinking about adopting an eight year old unneutered Yorkie male, and I dont want Joe going after him. Is there a way to solve this problem?

Hi, before I can answer your question, I do need to know how old the beagle is, and if he is neutered. Let me know, and I can help you with your dilemma.
Thanks,
Dawn
Answer Hi, you might have a problem introducing an older dog (especially an unneutered male) with a dog who is technically close to middle age as they are both set in their ways, and have probably been alpha dogs (in their own minds) in their respective homes. The younger dog will naturally challenge the older dog, and since he is a lot older, and smaller, the bigger dog could possibly harm him. Also, since the younger dog is already showing jealousy & possesiveness, it could make matters worse. Most of the time in this type of scenario, it is better to introduce a younger dog so that he will submit to the older dog in the heirachy and they will have their little pecking order established. If you do get the older dog, then I would suggest that you have lots of spray bottles, with water in them, around the house so that if they start to challenge each other, you can spray them & correct them for showing any dominace towards each other. When you use the spray bottles, you want to put them on direct stream, not mist as mist will not phase the dogs. I hope this helps, and if you have any other problems, just let me know.
