Question
I have a 2 and a half year old boston terrier. At night lately he will wake me up shaking almost like hes scared of something, then start panting like he's hot. His nose gets dry also. I've tried everything to calm him down but nothing works. I called the vet and they didn't seem very concerned. I feel very bad for him when he gets like that and I can't sleep because he wants to snuggle. He will act like that for a couple hours, then finally stop and go to sleep.

Answer
Hi Julie,

There's really no way to tell, but I wonder if he is having bad dreams. Dogs dream too, and maybe he is just scared. If he keeps it up, you may want to talk to your Vet about a mild sedative.  It's not something you want to have to do all the time, but maybe until he calms down a bit at night and is able to sleep the night through.  I hope it works out ok for you.

God Bless,
Becky

Expertise

I have owned dogs my whole life. I was a veterinarian assistant for several different vets, so I might be able to help out on health issues. Although I love all dogs, my favorites are the toy breed. I am not a breeder, so those type of questions should be directed to someone who is. I have three chinese crested, two chihuahuas and one yorkie/silky mix. I would be happy to answer any questions on these particular breeds,or just dogs in general. Please keep in mind, however, that I am NOT a Veterinarian. If you feel your dog is seriously ill, then please take your pet to a qualified professional. Although we "experts" try to help you with your questions, it is impossible to "see" or "touch" your dog through a computer. If you feel your dog's life is in danger, please call a Veterinarian immediately. Thank you!
