About Karen Brittan
Expertise
I have been showing miniature schnauzers in conformation, obedience, and earthdog for forty years, and am a professional dog groomer. I am not a veterinarian and cannot answer questions of a veterinary nature. However, I can give my opinion or share some experiences on some health issues. Everyone should remember that this is a volunteer service, and few of us are up late into the night. Medical emergencies require a veterinary visit, or at least a telephone call... not an internet question which might not be viewed and answered until hours later. If your dog is sick or injured, it should be seen by a licensed professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Experience
I have taught obedience classes and have taught people how to groom for many years.

Question
I have grown up with Labs my whole life and want a dog.  Unfortunately my boyfriend is highly allergic to hair (cat or dog), is there a breed that sheds less but is similar in look and temperament to the lab?

Answer
Unfortunately, I am not aware of one that resembles a labrador. There are some, mostly smaller breeds, who are often tolerated well by some people with allergies... but it really depends on the extent of that person's allergies. My husband has severe allergies, and does very well with our miniature schnauzers; they sleep with us.

Here is a site that lists a few "hypoallergenic" breeds: http://www.bigdogboutique.com/ProductCart/pc/hypo_allergenic_dogs.html

Go and visit a breeder for a couple hours before bringing a puppy home; your husband needs to test his allergies against the dogs.
