I have a 13 yeaer old Chinese Crested and they are prone to demodex. Check for this before you do anything as this skin parasite will make them crazy. Best Wishes.

Herbs in dogs that will help calm are st john's wort, oatstraw (this is perfect as you can give this to your dog in food and it is also an herb that can be placed on any sores or wounds (do an herbal infusion and add glycerine and your dog will also take it easily as they love glycerine. Visit the website sacredsteps dot  com   as I  for some herbal and natural remedies for pets. Good luck!

YOu might want to try Bitter Apple for stopping licking as the taste is not good.

It is the same product which is wonderful for putting on furniture to stop chewing, and I am told is fine to put on humans to stop chewing hands etc....

Maybe, with less or no licking, the infections wil stop.

my lab had really bad itching, licking her paws, and hair loss for years and i read a remedy on the web and i tried it and she has not had a skin problem since. You give your dog 1 apple cider vinegar pill a day and feed them eagle brand dog food that you find at pet stores. also, i treat her with revolution for fleas which seems to work better on her than frontline. at first i did not see an improvement but i stuck with it and after about 2 mos it starting making a difference.

Diet and over-vaccinating are huge culprits in unexplained itching and allergies--look into feeding your dog the highest quality natural/organic/fresh REAL food diet you can get your hands on and you will extend both the length and quality of his life!

The use of probiotics and coconut supplements can also be a huge help in overall health.

I think what the vet had prescribed was Prednisone, which is also what my dog has been prescribed numerous times for incessant itching, but i was told also that it is very tough on their systems. And now that my dog is getting older it "accelerates her impending blindness" among other things.

So my doctor also prescribed Benadryl for the itching, but also a few shampoos and creams and best of all, the ocean.

the ocean proved to be quite a remedy combined with a few others and the benadryl only needed to be used for a week or so.

In response to your answer Becky,

I have a 3 year old lab mix. Within the first year of having her she developed the habit of itching, and constantly chewing/licking her paws. The first vet prescribed steroids/prednisone and it of course worked but the long term health effects make it impossible to keep them on it for long periods of time. We found out the reason for the odd behavior was due to an allergy. We did testing through the vet to find out what it is, turns out it is grass/trees/weeds & mold. She is getting allergy shots to help build her immune system. But it does take quite awhile to actually see the changes. For the meantime, benadryl definitely helps!!!! Per the vet the dosage is 1mg per LB. Every 8 hours. Also i give her baths in special shampoo from the vet which is soap free and slightly medicated to calm the itch, which does really help. Other than that i try to make sure where she lays is clean and free of dust and it seems to help. Good luck because allergies can be quite annoying and VERY hard to deal with.

I have owned dogs my whole life. I was a veterinarian assistant for several different vets, so I might be able to help out on health issues. Although I love all dogs, my favorites are the toy breed. I am not a breeder, so those type of questions should be directed to someone who is. I have three chinese crested, two chihuahuas and one yorkie/silky mix. I would be happy to answer any questions on these particular breeds,or just dogs in general. Please keep in mind, however, that I am NOT a Veterinarian. If you feel your dog is seriously ill, then please take your pet to a qualified professional. Although we "experts" try to help you with your questions, it is impossible to "see" or "touch" your dog through a computer. If you feel your dog's life is in danger, please call a Veterinarian immediately. Thank you!
