AboutPatti Expertise To date, I've owned 7 dogs, all of which have lived into old age.
Having cared for them in all stages of life, I feel I can offer sound advice to other pet owners, and people considering getting a dog.
I am knowledgeable about the AKC (American Kennel Club) dog breeds, training and exercise, caring for sick and elderly pets, feeding, as well as many holistic treatments pets can benefit from.
My only request is that you write me using standard English and punctuation.
Experience My life experience in this field is more like "on the job training" rather than an actual degree in animal welfare. You may benefit from my experiences over the past 30 years.
Aside from the dogs I've owned, I'm also involved in "breed rescue" and have fostered several dogs, all of which have been adopted to wonderful "forever homes".
I find helping people who want a dog very rewarding.
Question We have a 15 month old yellow labrador that is losing hair on his right
hind quarter. He is sheding now but you can see the skin on his outer
leg. It doesn't appear to be happening anywhere else, and he doesn't chew
on that area either.
Any ideas?
Answer Hi Jim,
Dog hair loss can be categorized as inherited, developed during the dog's life or symptomatic of an underlying disease. Since most dogs, except for hairless breeds, have full even coats, the signs of patchy hair loss in dogs are cause for concern and the need for treatment.
There are several things that can cause hair loss in dogs. Some of these conditions are:
Flea bite or mosquito bite hypersensitivity, seasonal flank alopecia (which is hair loss on the
flanks that usually starts in the spring and ends in June or July), allergies or an infectious agent such as ringworm, hormonal disease such as hypothyroidism or Cushing's disease.
Your course of action should be to make an appointment with your veterinarian.
