Question
how can i tell if a dog is in labor i never had a dog that was pregent and i dont know what to exspect or the signs of labor

Answer
Hi Teresa,
From the time your dog was bred, it will be 63 days.  When she goes into labor, she will begin to pant.  She will begin to "nest" so it would be a good idea to prepare a place for her ahead of time.  A good box with shredded newspaper in it does great.  Do NOT put blankets or towels in the bed, as puppies have smothered to death getting wound up in them.  Newspaper is good because it absorbs moisture, is easy to clean up and replace, and it also has an insulation quality about it,that will help keep the puppies warm.  Be sure to change regularly so the puppies will not get wet and chill.  I would advise you to go online and check out some breeder sites to get more information about the actual birthing process so you will know what to expect.

God Bless!

I have owned dogs my whole life. I was a veterinarian assistant for several different vets, so I might be able to help out on health issues. Although I love all dogs, my favorites are the toy breed. I am not a breeder, so those type of questions should be directed to someone who is. I have three chinese crested, two chihuahuas and one yorkie/silky mix. I would be happy to answer any questions on these particular breeds,or just dogs in general. Please keep in mind, however, that I am NOT a Veterinarian. If you feel your dog is seriously ill, then please take your pet to a qualified professional. Although we "experts" try to help you with your questions, it is impossible to "see" or "touch" your dog through a computer. If you feel your dog's life is in danger, please call a Veterinarian immediately. Thank you!
