Question -
I have a 1961 Barbie Doll in original white vinyl case with clothes. Doll has non bendable legs and a blonde ponytail. Can you estimate it's value?  There is some bluing (wax?) around both ears. Otherwise doll is in mint condition. case is near mint condition.

         Thank you,

         Marie Bendekgey

Answer
Marie:

Sounds like you have a #5 Ponytail stock # 850 issued in 1961.  Barbie® #5 came in three hair colors—blond, brunette, or titian. #5 had subtler face paint, a tan-hued vinyl, and optional white sunglasses. This was the first year of the hollow body—marked Barbie®—with a small neck knob.  The doll if in the Original Black & White swim suite, in excellent condition, could be worth $450.00.  The green ears is going to hurt the doll badly.  That is a cancer like growth resulting from a chemical reaction between the vinyl and the metal of the earing.  If the pearl earrings are still in the ears, REMOVE them NOW.  I see some #5 with green ear selling as high as $100.00, but sold with an excellent outfit.  The Brunet sells for more.  As far as your white vinyl case and clothes go, you best go to the library and look up the cloths in Sara Eames Barbie Fashion Book and see what all the parts are that go with those outfits.  There is also a book on Cases.  Cannot recall the name off hand.
