Question I am the mother of a 9 year old daughter. Her father and I have joint legal and physical custody. She spends half the week in their home in my x-husband's home. Him and his current wife have domestics. There is police incident reports and 8 neighbors that spoke to a custody evaluator confirming that it has been atleast two years. There is even an audio tape of them hitting and threats to kill with my daughter in background. I brought this up to court, and the judge said...He is sure now that it is out in the public they will change. THAT'S IT!! No supervised visitation...nothing. Is this right? Do violent people change overnight? Any info would help. Thank you!
Answer Dear April,
You really need to talk to a domestic violence advocate in your area. If your judge is willing to let this go, then perhaps your local court system is not in the business of prosecuting domestic violence. Or maybe your custody history in court has been very contentious. Either way, your best advice will come from someone in your locality who knows your laws and how your system works.
Sincerely,
Laura Giles
