Expertise
I know attractions and hotels in the Puerto Plata (North Coast) area of the Dominican Republic. Please note: Punta Cana is NOT in this area!

Dominican Republic - which region?

Question
QUESTION: My husband and I (we're in our 60's and just retired) are looking for a place to get out of the long New Hampshire winter every year for at least a month.  The Dominican Republic looks beautiful, and affordable.  I'd like to ask which part of the country you think might suit us best.  We're not big on nightlife, don't care much for crowds or noise, and like our privacy and creature comforts.  We do like nature, the sea, snorkeling, horseback riding, small towns with friendly people, but also Internet and Cable connections!  Any suggestions?  Thanks for whatever you can tell us!

ANSWER: Try Sosua or the area between Puerto Plata and Sosua. Try contacting a real estate agent you find here: www.popreport.com to get started. The nice houses are in the hills to the south of the main highway, but there are lots of them and most have cable and decent Internet connections.

QUESTION: Will definitely check those places out.  I've been reading about Las Terrenas and Las Galeras.  What do you think of those places for people like us?

Answer
I have to confess that I'm not sure about those places, which are a bit more remote. You can get nature, the sea and horses, but you won't find getting consumer goods so easy. Satellite TV is easy enough, of course, but I don't know about good Internet connections. Maybe, maybe not. Sorry about this but those places are a little too far away from my area of expertise for me to say for sure either way.
