Dominican Republic - Puerto Plata: Shopping for a place to live

Expert: Tim Hall - 7/1/2009

Question
I wish to retire on the north side of the Dominican Republic and I wish to know what areas are the safest, as in gated and secure communities so that I can pin-point an area when I look for a home to purchase. I have a few friends living in Puerto Plata and I would like to be nearest to them, yet in a far better neighborhood.
Please help, Thanks in advance, Laurie

Answer
It sounds like you already know what you don't like; now you just need to find what you like best. I would suggest renting an apartment or aparthotel by the month and then go exploring, taking your time to look everywhere. It's the only way you can be really sure that what you find is what you want.

There are clean, comfortable and reasonably priced aparthotels and small hotels safely located in city center such as Montesilva near the Courthouse, Swiss Guesthouse on the Malecon beside La Sirena store or Bonzai on Juan Bosch St (former John F Kennedy) corner Separacion.
