I'm looking into purchasing real estate in DR. I was wondering if you could tell me if Puerto Plata is a luxury location. If not could you please tell me where in DR are cosidered great top notch villa locations. Thanks
Answer No. 1 top notch place is Casa de Campo, east of Santo Domingo, but there are several luxury neighborhoods in and around Pto. Plata -- Costambar and Cofresi a few miles to the west of the city, several places between the city and the airport (Sea Horse Ranch comes to mind, but there are several) and some very expensive homes in the hills inland from Sosua. To the east of Sosua, in Cabarete, are some new condos in Coral Reef Condominiums. If you don't speak Spanish (or even if you do), visit www.popreport.com and its advertisers to get some ideas online, but you really need to go look around, make sure they have reliable generators for electricity and to determine if they in fact have a "gated entrance," if you like that sort of thing. The other hint is to deal with a reliable real estate agent -- try visiting one in the Playa Dorada shopping center for starters (that's also between the city and the airport) or ask someone you see outside a home in the neighborhood that interests you.
